Vaginal odor, sometimes also referred to as feminine odor, is a problem that can affect almost every women of reproductive age (even among healthy and hygienic women) and it is a health topic not easily or often spoken of.
Normally, the female vagina is odor-free however foul smelling odor can develop when there is an overgrowth of "bad" bacteria in the vagina which disrupt the pH balance of the vaginal flora.
In general, if you never have had vaginal odor before, it is best to first consult with a doctor to establish the cause. Among one of the most common causes for a woman to have an unpleasant genital odor is bacterial vaginosis, which has a "fishy" or "musty" smell.
If the odor smell "yeasty", it may be cause by a vaginal yeast infection, which will also show up with an increase in the amount of vaginal discharge.
If you are in good medical condition, other possible causes for vaginal odor include:
- Vaginal discharge during the menstruation cycle or after sex.
- Poor personal hygiene.
- Douching or excessive washing that strip or destroy the natural vaginal flora (lactobacilli) that are necessary for good feminine health.
- Wearing of tight pants or undies causing vaginal sweating. Excess moisture from the sweat can encourage bacterial growth or increase vaginal odor.
- A forgotten tampon left inside your vagina can provoke vaginal odor.
- Having multiple sex partners can cause vaginal infection resulting in vaginal odor.
Less commonly, vaginal odor may also be caused by:
- Change in diet. Too much sugary foods and drinks that can increase the amount of yeast in your vagina., increasing the chances of a yeast infection.
- Cancer of the cervix, uterine or bowel.
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or genital herpes.

Kate and Joy, you guys probably have a yeast infection.. I've had one for 3 weeks and the doctors gave me drugs to clear it up.. The signs of a yeast infection would be a white or grey discharge that comes out in chunks. It smells really bad, but not like fish.
